Betrayer

Betrayer is a first-person action-adventure game developed by Blackpowder Games and published by Blackpowder Games and Iceberg Interactive. It was released for Microsoft Windows on March 24, 2014.

The game is set in colonial Virginia in the 17th century. The player controls a nameless protagonist who arrives in the colony expecting to join a struggling settlement, but instead finds only ghosts and mysteries. The player must explore the game world, solve puzzles, and fight enemies in order to uncover the truth about what happened to the colony.

Betrayer features a monochrome art style that is inspired by 17th century paintings and engravings. The game also uses sound in a significant way, with the player relying on sound cues to find clues and enemies.

The game was met with mixed reviews upon release. Critics praised the game’s atmosphere, art style, and sound design, but criticized its lack of direction and repetitive gameplay.

Betrayer was removed from the Steam store in 2017 at the request of the publisher. However, it was re-released on GOG for free in 2023.

Here are some of the features of Betrayer:

  • Monochrome art style inspired by 17th century paintings and engravings
  • Sound plays a central role in exploring the game world
