The game was funded through a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, raising over $3.3 million.
Broken Age tells the story of two teenagers with no immediately apparent connection, each “seeking to break the tradition in their lives”. Vella Tartine (voiced by Masasa Moyo) is a young woman living in the Badlands, a land ravaged by the Mogs, giant creatures that come from beyond a wall called the Plague Dam. Appearing every fourteen years, they are appeased by the sacrifice of young girls at a number of Maiden’s Feasts held at various villages. Vella is determined to break this tradition and save herself from being sacrificed.
Shay Volta (voiced by Elijah Wood) is a young boy living on a spaceship called the Astral Express. Shay is a brilliant inventor who has been trapped on the ship for his entire life. He dreams of escaping and exploring the galaxy.
The player can freely switch between Vella and Shay’s stories, helping them take control of their own lives, and dealing with the unexpected adventures that follow.
