Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Will Use AI to Moderate Voice Chat

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will use AI to moderate voice chat. Activision has partnered with Modulate to use their AI-powered moderation system called ToxMod to identify and take action against all forms of toxic verbal speech. This is in addition to Call of Duty’s anti-toxicity team’s own measures against text-based toxic chat and usernames.

ToxMod is a machine learning model that has been trained on a massive dataset of toxic and non-toxic voice chat. It can identify toxic speech in real time, including hate speech, discriminatory language, and harassment. When ToxMod detects toxic speech, it can take a number of actions, such as muting the player, kicking them from the match, or suspending their account.

Activision has said that the AI moderation system will be used alongside the existing reporting system. Players will still be able to report players for toxic behavior, and Activision will investigate and take action on these reports.

The use of AI to moderate voice chat is a new approach to tackling toxic behavior in online gaming. It remains to be seen how effective it will be, but it is a step in the right direction.

Here are some of the benefits of using AI to moderate voice chat:

  • It can be more effective than human moderation. AI can process voice chat much faster than humans, and it can identify toxic speech that humans might miss.
  • It can be more consistent. AI can apply the same rules to everyone, regardless of who is moderating the chat.
  • It can be more scalable. AI can be used to moderate voice chat in large online games, where human moderation would be impractical.

However, there are also some challenges to using AI to moderate voice chat:

  • It can be inaccurate. AI is still under development, and it can sometimes make mistakes.
  • It can be biased. AI models are trained on data that is collected from humans, and this data can be biased.
  • It can be privacy-invasive. AI models need to collect data about voice chat in order to train and operate, and this data could be used to track or identify users.

Overall, the use of AI to moderate voice chat is a promising new approach to tackling toxic behavior in online gaming. However, it is important to be aware of the challenges and limitations of this technology.
