Contrast

Contrast is a puzzle-platform game developed by Compulsion Games and published by Microsoft Studios. It was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and NVIDIA Shield in November 2013.

The game is set in a noir atmosphere aesthetically inspired by Belle Epoque and Art Nouveau. The player must solve puzzles that require movement between the physical world, which is represented as 3D, and shadows, which are represented as 2D. The player may sometimes manipulate different light sources in the 3D world (spotlights, film projectors, etc.) to create the shadow paths that reach into new areas; “collectibles”, available through game-play, offer insight into the game’s characters and the world in which they live.

The player takes on the role of Dawn, the imaginary friend of a young girl named Didi. Dawn has the unique ability to move between the 3D world and the 2D shadow world. She uses this ability to help Didi solve puzzles and overcome obstacles.

The game’s story follows Didi and Dawn as they try to solve the mystery of Didi’s father’s disappearance. Along the way, they uncover secrets about the family’s past and the dark forces that are at work in the city.

Contrast was well-received by critics, who praised its unique gameplay, art style, and story. It was nominated for several awards, including Best Indie Game at The Game Awards 2013.
