The game is set in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth, after the events of The Lord of the Rings. The Mines of Moria have been abandoned for centuries, but they are now being overrun by orcs and other creatures. Players must explore the mines, gather resources, and build their own settlements. They must also battle the forces of evil and reclaim the mines for the Dwarves.
