Saints Row Developer Volition Has Shut Down

Volition, the developer of the Saints Row franchise, has shut down effective immediately. The news was announced on August 31, 2023, in a post on the studio’s website.

The closure was reportedly due to a restructuring program by Volition’s parent company, Embracer Group. Embracer Group announced the restructuring program in June 2023, as part of a plan to “strengthen Embracer and maintain its position as a leader in the video game industry.”

Volition was founded in 1996 and is based in Champaign, Illinois. The studio is best known for developing the Saints Row franchise, which began in 2006. The latest installment in the franchise, Saints Row, was released in August 2022.

The closure of Volition is a major blow to the Saints Row franchise. It is unclear what will happen to the franchise now that Volition is gone. It is possible that Embracer Group will find another studio to develop future Saints Row games, but it is also possible that the franchise will be discontinued altogether.

The closure of Volition is also a sign of the challenges facing the video game industry. The industry is facing increasing competition from other forms of entertainment, such as streaming and mobile gaming. As a result, many video game studios are struggling to stay afloat.
